Chico, CA : Five people injured, including Carmichael baby in a chain-reaction crash on Highway 99 in Butte County on Thursday, March 12, 2015
Five people from Northern California -- including a Carmichael infant -- were hurt Thursday in a chain-reaction crash on Highway 99 near Chico, police said.
Just before 1:40 p.m., an 18-year-old from Sutter merged onto southbound Highway 99 from Durham-Pentz Road, according to the California Highway Patrol. The teen was likely driving faster than the speed limit allowed, the CHP implied, adding that he "made an unsafe turning movement" -- and lost control of his 1997 Mercury, police said in a news release. The boy didn't have any passengers at the time.
The Mercury careened across the highway and into the center median. The car flipped as it entered the lanes heading north, according to police. The teenager suffered major injuries.
His car landed in the path of a 2007 Mazda, police said.
Alyssa Gore, of Carmichael, was behind the wheel of that car. The 26-year-old was driving about 55 mph when the two cars collided head-on, the CHP said.
Inside her car were Tyson Smith, also 26 and from Carmichael, and 2-month-old Emily Smith.
Gore and Tyson Smith suffered major injuries in the wreck, as well. The infant is moderately hurt but she's expected to survive, police said.
Meanwhile, when the Mercury hit the Mazda, Gore's vehicle -- upon impact -- was then hit into the next lane -- directly into a 2004 Dodge with a trailer attached, the CHP said.
The Dodge, driven by Kingsley Mcpherson, of Nevada City, was traveling about the same speed as Gore.
Mcpherson had one passenger in the Dodge at the time, 67-year-old Gail Anderson. He was also pulling two horses inside the trailer. The animals weren't hurt in the crash, police said.
Mcpherson, 68, suffered minor injuries. Anderson's are considered moderate.
All five people in the three vehicles were taken to Enloe Hospital. The CHP didn't release the teen's name.
