DURHAM, NC : Fatal wrong-way crash on I-85 involved 8 passengers on Sunday, March 19th 2017
A crash that killed two people and injured others on Interstate 85 near East Club Boulevard in Durham Monday morning was caused by a wrong-way driver.
The incident happened at about 12:15 a.m., according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation.
According to officers with the Durham Police Department, Aretha Lynette Chavis, 49, of Durham, was driving a 2012 Hyundai Sonata in the wrong direction on I-85 north when she struck a 2017 Ford Expedition driven by Jerry Alamo, 29, of Rhode Island. Both Alamo and Chavis were killed in the crash.
Officials said there were eight passengers in Alamo's car. One passenger, Glenda Alamo, 36, suffered critical injuries. Three children (ages 4, 11 and 10) and four adults (ages 16, 21, 22 and 32) were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. 1
There were no passengers in Chavis' vehicle, police said.
All the closed lanes had reopened at 5:15 a.m.
No other information about the wreck, including a possible cause, has been released.
