A Burgaw man was killed in an early morning motorcycle crash Sunday.

Robert Winston Bennett, 58, of Burgaw, died in the wreck, according to N.C. Highway Patrol Sgt. Jason Casteen. The wreck was reported at 2:53 a.m. at the intersection of New Road and Old River Road in Burgaw.

Casteen said Bennett’s motorcycle was the only vehicle incolved in the wreck. He said it appeared that Bennett, driving on a stretch of rural road, did not see the stop sign at the intersection until it was too late.

“He slammed on the breaks probably about 30 feet before reaching the stop sign, was unable to stop, left the roadway straight ahead and struck a highway sign and then struck a tree,” Casteen said.
