Anchorage, AK : Sports car that smashed into a school bus Wednesday on Northern Lights Boulevard was carrying a 2-year-old child in the backseat on October 15th 2014
Anchorage police say the sports car that smashed into a school bus Wednesday on Northern Lights Boulevard was carrying a 2-year-old child in the backseat. Another driver caught the crash on camera.
The child did not appear to be injured in the collision, said police spokeswoman Dani Myren. No charges had been filed in the case, which is still under investigation, as of Thursday morning.
Myren identified the driver of the black Ford Mustang as 20-year-old Alexie Kapotak. Kapotak complained of pain to his upper body and was taken to a local hospital.
"The child was uninjured but was transported (to the hospital) with her father," Myren said.
A dashboard camera installed on a nearby car recorded footage of the 11 a.m. wreck at Northern Lights and UAA Drive.
In a video of the crash, provided to Channel 2 by viewer Jeff Stender, the school bus struck in the crash is stopped in a left-turn lane on Northern Lights, waiting to turn south onto UAA Drive. Seconds after the adjacent light for westbound traffic on Northern Lights goes red, Kapotak's car hits the the bus on its right side powerfully enough to lift the larger vehicle’s weight off its right rear wheel.
“Dash cameras don't lie,” Stender wrote in a Facebook message to Channel 2. “Everyone should have one.”
Myren said the bus was driven by Michael Loftus. Anchorage School District spokesperson Heidi Embley told Channel 2 Wednesday that the bus was carrying 39 King Career Center students at the time of the crash, with nobody on board injured.
"Two students mentioned minor pain," Embley wrote.
Embley said that due to the time of the crash, the students were likely en route back to their high schools from the center.
APD reported that Northern Lights' westbound lanes were closed between Bragaw Street and UAA Drive for more than an hour as police responded, reopening at about 12:20 p.m.
According to Myren, Kapotak's daughter -- the only other occupant of the car -- was seated in the back seat.
"There was no indication that she was not improperly secured," Myren said.
Myren says no charges or citations have currently been filed in the crash.
"It's an open and ongoing investigation," Myren said.
