DURHAM, NC : Lee man dies in single-car crash in Durham on Thursday, 24th September, 2020

A Lee man died Thursday night after his vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree off Packers Falls Road.

Mark Chilcott, 60, later succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash at Portsmouth Regional Hospital, according to Durham Deputy Police Chief David Holmstock.

Holmstock said a nearby homeowner reported the one-car crash after hearing the sound of the impact at 9:14 p.m. Sept. 24. Durham Police, Fire and McGregor Memorial EMS arrived on scene a minute later.

Investigators at the scene determined Chilcott was traveling south on Packers Falls Road between Wednesday Hill Road and Wiswall Road in a 2017 Nissan Frontier when he lost control of the vehicle, crossed over the northbound lane, left the roadway and struck a tree, according to Holmstock.

Chilcott was the vehicle’s only occupant. Crews extricated him from the car and transported him to Portsmouth Regional.

Holmstock said the crash remains under investigation. Investigators believe speed was a factor, Holmstock said.
