Gary, IN : A fiery single-car crash in Westchester Township on Sunday, 8th April 2018

A fiery single-car crash early Sunday in Westchester Township claimed the lives of the vehicle's two occupants, according to officials.

Porter County Coroner Chuck Harris said his office was called to the scene of the crash on U.S. Highway 12, just east of Tremont Road, at 12:33 a.m.

A blue Chevy Equinox that had been traveling westbound on U.S. 12 had left the roadway and struck a tree, Harris said in a release. After the crash, the vehicle ignited and became engulfed in flames with the passengers inside, he said.

The occupants, a male and female, remained unidentified Sunday afternoon, he said. The Porter County Coroner's office will attempt to use dental X-rays for identification.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation, according to the release. The Porter County Sheriff's Department could not be reached for comment Sunday.
