Westchester, NY : Off-duty cop rescues man from fiery gas pump crash on June 12, 2014
There were some tense moments along New York City’s Hutchinson Parkway after an elderly driver crashed into a gas pump and caused a massive fire.
Police say six people were injured when the 70 year-old driver had a diabetic emergency and lost control of his car, hitting the pump. An off-duty police officer was pumping gas at the time. He managed to pull the elderly driver from his wrecked car.
Moments later, the flames erupted into a fiery mess, burning two other nearby vehicles. The off-duty officer said the incident happened so fast.
“I went to look up and to see what was going on and the next thing I knew the pump was coming down on top of me," said Officer John Vescio, Sr., from the New York State Police Department.
A total of four cars were damaged and six people were injured. None of the injuries were considered life-threatening.
