A driver leaves a 72-year-old woman lying in the road, bleeding and badly injured.
Altamonte Springs police said an SUV struck the woman while she crossed State Road 436 at Festival Drive on Tuesday afternoon.
Police said that driver was well aware they had struck the woman but instead of stopping they took off. Investigators said surveillance video from a nearby business captured the crash.
Witnesses said the victim and her mother were in the crosswalk, had the right of way and that the older woman barely escaped being struck as well.
Police hope the driver involved will come forward.
"There are family members grieving for this 72-year-old woman who's in critical condition at ORMC," said Altamonte Springs police spokesman Robert Pelton. "Sometimes we call these accidents, and it very well could have been an accident, right now we're just asking them to come forward and speak with us so we can understand what happened."
The victim is in critical condition in the trauma unit at ORMC.
