San Jose, CA : Mountain View man jailed on possible DUI, manslaughter charges in wrong-way Highway 101 crash that killed Gilroy man on early Saturday, July 12, 2014
A Mountain View man faces potential DUI and manslaughter charges after authorities say he drove the wrong way on Highway 101 and glanced off a tour bus before crashing into a car, killing a Gilroy man.
Casey Matthew Olson, 22, was being held at the Santa Clara County jail on $250,000 bail for a crash that killed 25-year-old Christian Reyes, who was a passenger in the Dodge vehicle hit by Olson's Honda van early Saturday, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Just before 2 a.m., witnesses reported seeing the van driving northbound in the southbound lanes south of San Jose, and as it passed Blossom Hill Road, the vehicle side-swiped a tour bus then glanced off a Honda Civic before crashing head-on into the Dodge carrying Reyes.
Moments after impact, an approaching Volkswagen swerved to the edge of the road to avoid the wreck and rolled over into a roadside ditch, the CHP said.
The 21-year-old Gilroy man driving the Dodge was not seriously injured and able to get out of his vehicle, but Reyes was pinned in the passenger seat and died at the scene. Olson was taken to the hospital where he was treated for injuries including broken ribs and was booked into jail later that morning, CHP Officer Ross Lee said.
The driver of the overturned Volkswagen, a 24-year-old Castroville woman, was not seriously injured, nor was the 24-year-old Morgan Hill woman driving the Honda Civic. There were also no injuries on tour bus, which was carrying 25 passengers plus the driver.
