Abingdon,IL : Abingdon woman killed in crash on Gerlaw blacktop on April, Wednesday 25th 2018

An Abingdon woman died Wednesday morning after a crash on the Gerlaw blacktop in Warren County just east of here.

Katelyn A. Katzell, 21, Abingdon, was westbound on Warren County Road 2450N (Gerlaw blacktop) and “failed to stop at the posted stop sign, entering the intersection” with County Road 1200E (Alexis blacktop), according to a news release from District 14 Illinois State Police. Katzell’s Chevrolet Sonic was struck on the passenger front corner by a southbound Chevrolet pickup truck driven by Christopher B. Carson, 33, Gerlaw.

The incident occurred at 7:50 a.m.

“Unit #1 (Katzell’s) was shoved south of the intersection, coming to rest across (2450 North),” the news release stated. “Unit #2 left the roadway into a field. Unit #2 eventually came to rest on its wheels in the field, southwest of the intersection.”

According to state police, Katzell was not wearing a seat belt at the time. Both drivers were transported by Galesburg Hospitals’ Ambulance Service to OSF St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg.

Katzell died from her injuries. Carson, who was wearing a seat belt, was treated for minor injuries and released, according to the news release. Carson is not being charged at this time.
