Frederick, MD : No major injuries reported in three-car crash on U.S. 340 that involved state trooper on Friday night, September 9, 2016
Three vehicles, including a Maryland State Police cruiser, were involved in a crash that closed part of U.S. 340 near Frederick on Friday night.
State police said in a news release that the driver of one car — Maurice Reid, 36, of Frederick — was flown by helicopter to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. He was treated there and released.
Trooper Robert Hook, who was driving a marked police cruiser, was taken to Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was treated there and released.
The driver of the third car — Tehsin Ghaffar, 53, of Frederick — did not report any injuries. A passenger in that car — Saadia Huq, whose age was not given, of Frederick — was taken by ambulance to Frederick Memorial Hospital for treatment of a possible injury.
The crash happened at about 9 p.m. on U.S. 340 just west of Mount Zion Road.
A police press release said Hook, 34, who is assigned to the Frederick barrack, had just finished a call in which he stopped someone for a traffic infraction on the eastbound side.
Hook merged from the shoulder into the right lane to leave the scene of the traffic stop, with his car's emergency lights still activated. Shortly after, his 2007 Ford Crown Victoria cruiser collided with a 2009 Pontiac G6, which Reid was driving.
The Pontiac then swerved to the left and crossed the median, hitting a 2001 Honda Accord, in which Ul Ghaffar and Hug were traveling west, head-on.
The road in that area was closed for about four hours for the investigation and removal of the vehicles, police said.
Police said no charges have been filed.
They reminded drivers that Maryland's "move over" law requires drivers to move to an adjacent lane, if it's safe, to give room to emergency vehicles and tow trucks on the shoulder of the road.
