BELTON, TX : Man dies in 3-vehicle accident on U.S. 190 on Monday, 17th October 2016
An accident between an 18-wheeler, a motorcyclist and a white Toyota van at 9:01 a.m. Monday claimed the life of 45-year-old Bradley Dean Jones of Harker Heights, Belton Deputy Chief Larry Berg confirmed Monday afternoon.
Belton spokesman Paul Romer said the motorcycle hit a white Toyota van that slowed for traffic shortly after 9 a.m.
The motorcyclist fell off the motorcycle and rolled into the path of the 18-wheeler. Both the motorcycle and its rider ended up underneath the trailer.
The three-vehicle accident happened on eastbound U.S. Highway 190 on the George Wilson Road overpass in Belton, backing up traffic for several miles.
Bell County Justice of the Peace David Barfield said he pronounced Jones dead at 11 a.m. and sent his body to the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dallas for an autopsy.
The truck drivers and the people in the van were not injured, Romer said.
The accident is under investigation by the police department Crash Investigation Team.
The Temple Police Department came to the scene to inspect the 18-wheeler, Berg said.
Also present at the scene were the fire department and one unit from the Texas Department of Public Safety, Barfield said.
U.S. 190 traffic was rerouted to the eastbound frontage road as crash investigators surveyed the area and waited to talk to those involved. Eastbound U.S. 190 was closed for several hours, and alternate routes were advised by police.
Eastbound U.S. 190 reopened to traffic at 1:30 p.m., Berg said.
Witnesses at the scene said it looked like the motorcyclist was weaving in and out of traffic when the accident happened, and said the motorcyclist was trapped underneath the 18-wheeler.
Texas Department of Transportation crews at the scene reported drivers turned around on eastbound U.S. 190, drove the wrong way and either drove through the ditches or went the wrong way on entrance ramps to avoid the accident’s congestion.
Another motorcyclist died a week ago in Temple on Interstate 35.
A motorcycle driven by David Canales, 58, of Richardson, collided with a Temple-based Shallow Ford Construction fuel truck carrying 1,000 gallons of fuel.
An accident investigator on Monday told Temple police spokesman Joe Thomas that the accident reconstruction hasn’t been completed and may take up to another week.
