Southaven, MS : Lewisburg teen dies in crash near the Mississippi Department of Transportation weigh station on Saturday, July 9, 2016
A 16-year-old Lewisburg youth died late Saturday in a one-car accident near the Mississippi Department of Transportation weigh station along Interstate 55.
DeSoto County Coroner Jeff Pounders said Ronnie Zelaya, 16, of 3440 Roberts Drive, Olive Branch, died around 11:55 p.m. Saturday night after the late-model BMW Mini-Cooper in which he was a passenger apparently hydroplaned on a rain-slick section of Interstate 55, then flipped and careened between two trees.
The accident occurred during a heavy downpour, according to Pounders.
Pounders said Zelaya and the female driver along with another female passenger were traveling south to Coldwater when the accident happened.
Two juvenile females in the vehicle with Zelaya were transported to local hospitals but escaped serious injury.
Funeral arrangements are pending at Brantley Funeral Home in Olive Branch.
Zelaya had attended Lewisburg High School was said to be enrolled at a private school in Memphis. Friends and classmates say Zelaya was a well-liked student.
