Burlington, VT : Three sent to hospital after car crash, fire on Sunday September 4 2016
Three people from Quebec were taken to the hospital Sunday night following a single-car crash and fire on Interstate 89 near Highgate, the Vermont State Police said.
Police responded at about 7 p.m. near mile marker 124. The interstate was shut down in the area for about 40 minutes, and traffic was diverted.
The car, a 2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse, was being driven north by Christian Ardelean, 23, of Quebec. The driver lost control of the car and it traveled off the highway, state police said.
The car slid sideways, struck a tree and rolled onto the passenger side before erupting into flames, police said. One of two passengers, Ayah Ghaddar, 23, also of Quebec, was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the car. The extent of Ghaddar's injuries was unknown late Sunday, but police say they were not life-threatening.
The other passenger, Saratou Issoufou, 23, of Quebec, and the driver were wearing seat belts and were able to get out of the car before the fire. Issoufou suffered a hand injury. Ardelean was uninjured, police said.
All three people were brought to Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans for treatment.
The state police initially had said only one person was sent to the hospital following the crash.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers were first on scene and began to deliver medical aid to the car's occupants while other emergency services responded, state police said. Highgate Fire Department, AmCare Emergency Medical Services and the state police all responded.
