SUMTERVILLE, FL : 2 seriously injured in crash involving ambulance, dump truck on Monday, 26th March 2018
Two people sustained serious injuries Monday morning when a Sumter County EMS ambulance made a U-turn into the path of a dump truck.
Michael Mahai, 22, of Eustis, the driver of the ambulance was seriously hurt, and so was the dump truck’s passenger, Nicholas Fatolitis, 22, of Leesburg, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The ambulance was traveling north on U.S. Highway 301 at 9:56 a.m., and was at Northeast 13th Avenue, when it pulled off onto the shoulder. The driver activated the emergency lights, and then made the turn into the path of the dump truck.
Charles Dean, 39, of Spring Hill, a passenger in the ambulance suffered minor injuries. Jorge Luis Rodriguez, 40, of Orlando, the driver of the dump truck, also suffered minor injuries.
Mahai and Fatolitis were taken to Ocala Regional Hospital. Rodriguez was taken to South Lake Hospital and Dean to Citrus Memorial.
Mahai was cited for making an unsafe turn.
