St. Johns County, FL : One person seriously injured in triple semitruck crash near mile marker 319 on Tuesday, January 26, 2015

Charges are now pending in a traffic crash that continues to stall traffic Tuesday in St. Johns County.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, a collision involving three fully loaded semi-tractor trailers happened at approximately 5:00 a.m. on I-95 northbound near the State Road 16 exit.

A 41-year-old St. Augustine man was driving in the far outside lane when troopers said he rear-ended the trailer being driven by a 60-year-old St. Augustine man.

That collision caused both semis to become entagled and block traffic.

A short time later, troopers said the third semi, driven by a 57-year-old St. Augustine man, failed to observe the initial crash and swerved, but hit the first semi.

The third semi came to a rest in the same lane.

Emergency personnel arrived and reportedly had to cut the 41-year-old driver out of his truck so he could be airlifted to a Jacksonville hospital.

At last check, he was listed in serious condition. The other two drivers were not seriously injured, troopers reported.

The outside two lanes of Interstate 95 sustained serious damage in the crash.

FHP said transportation officials would have to work throughout the days to make repairs. It's expected that there will be lane closures in the area for most of Tuesday.

For several hours following the accident, the entire northbound side of 95 was closed to all traffic.

Troopers later opened the far outside lane, which is what will remain open through the lunch hour. It's unclear when all the lanes will reopen.

Debris from the three semis also spilled onto the roadway.
