Auburn, ME : Four injured in a three-car crash on Route 4 and Townsend Brook Road on Monday, July 4, 2016
Four people were taken to Central Maine Medical Center on Monday following a three-car crash at the intersection of Route 4 and Townsend Brook Road, according to Auburn police officer Matt Eli.
Thomas Hanson, 61, and his wife, Claire Hanson, 60, of Fayette were on the northbound side of Route 4 in the left lane, waiting for a break in traffic to turn left onto Townsend Brook Road, Eli said.
While waiting to turn, their blue Honda Civic was struck by Bryan Somers, 28, of Gray, who was driving a Subaru Outback.
The impact forced the Hanson's car into oncoming traffic in the southbound lane, where they collided with a blue Saab operated by Lisa Hancock, 49, and occupied by her husband, Ralph Hancock, 53, of Bradford, Mass., Eli said.
The Hansons and the Hancocks were taken to CMMC with injuries that were not life-threatening. All three vehicles were declared total losses and were towed from the scene.
Somers, who escaped without injury, is being cited with driving while distracted.
"There was no sign he stopped or slowed down at all," Eli said. "He said he was reaching for something and next thing he knew, his air bags were going off."
Auburn police and fire departments responded to the scene, which was reported at 12:25 p.m.
All lanes of travel were open within an hour, Eli said.
