Bessemer City, N.C : Driver dies after car crashes into home in Bessemer City on Thursday, February 18, 2016

A man died after a car crashed into a house in Bessemer City, officials said.

The crash was reported just before 10:30 a.m. Thursday on Costner School Road at Airways Drive.

Police said the truck was speeding at 65 mph when it hit the house on Costner School Road. It left the road and traveled the length of a football field, knocking a parked truck on its side.

“Luckily, there was no one else on the roadway, or it could have been much worse,” Sgt. Mark Morgan, with Bessemer City police, said.

Neighbor Ken Weatherford watched it happen.

"No brakes. No nothing. Just sounded like an explosion,” he said.

Police believe the driver may have had some medical condition that made him lose control.

Courtney Price heard the blaring truck alarm and rushed over to help.

"I hollered to him, 'Sir? Sir? Will you answer me? Sir, are you conscious?' And he wouldn't reply,” she said.

She said bricks flew through the windshield and landed on the driver. She saw him take one last breath.

"We kept trying to check on him, but it was too late," Price said.

Chopper 9 flew over the crash site as rescuers tried to add extra support beams under the wall smashed by the truck.

The elderly woman in the house didn't realize what happened. Her husband working outside told her. They are fine. They wished the driver of the truck could have been so lucky.

There are still some concerns about the structural integrity of the wall of the house. Fortunately, the elderly couple who live there are able to move out for a couple of days until those problems are resolved.
