Battle Mountain, NV : NDOT employee dead after commercial truck hit him on the side of the road on Monday, March 30, 2015
An NDOT employee was killed in a crash Monday morning west of Battle Mountain while working to repair cracks in concrete.
Nevada Highway Patrol Troopers responded to a fatal crash at around 9:29 a.m. on I-80 westbound at mile marker 227.
According to NHP's preliminary investigation, a commercial motor vehicle was approaching a Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) crew of two men. The NDOT employees were working in the area of the right shoulder repairing cracks in the concrete. For unknown reasons, the driver of the commercial motor vehicle allowed his vehicle to partially enter onto the right shoulder, striking one of the NDOT employees. The driver of the commercial vehicle brought the truck to a controlled stop. The NDOT employee was pronounced deceased on scene.
The driver of the commercial vehicle was identified as 30-year-old Mario Alfonso Calzada from Tijuana, Mexico. The NDOT employee struck and killed was identified as 47-year-old Ronald Paul Raiche Jr. from Battle Mountain, Nevada.
Based upon the preliminary investigation, Mr. Calzada was taken into custody for Involuntary Manslaughter, Due Care, and no valid CDL (Commercial Driver’s License). Alcohol and drugs do not appear to be contributing factors in this accident.
