Anderson, IN : Driver injured in crash at 53rd Street and Ridge Road on Sunday, May 15, 2016

A man was conscious Sunday evening when he was taken to the hospital after his Chevrolet pickup truck skidded off 53rd Street, near Good's Candy Shop, and crashed into a light pole.

Morris Thomas, who lives near the corner of 53rd Street and Ridge Road, said he watched the accident happen from his front porch. He said the driver appeared to have been trying to make a turn onto Ridge Road.

The truck skidded, careening into a ditch, flipped backward and crashed the tailgate into a light pole, according to the witness.

“He was going quite fast, too fast to make the turn,” Thomas said. “I jumped up as soon as I saw him go off the road.”

Thomas sprinted to the truck to try to help, but when he got there, “I looked in the passenger side window and I didn’t think anyone was in there.”

Thomas couldn’t see the driver because he was wedged under the floorboard with his head twisted at an odd angle.

He knew it's advised not to move someone who has been in an accident, but Thomas said he was worried the driver would suffocate if he was left where he was. So he and another person who had stopped to help pulled the driver out of the car.

“Once we got him out he was breathing on his own,” Thomas said.

The driver was transported by Anderson Fire Department paramedics to Community Hospital to be treated for possible serious injuries including a cut on his head. The driver wasn’t wearing a seat belt, according to Anderson police at the scene.
