Sunderland, MA : Two people minor injuries after a five-car crash on the Deerfield-Sunderland Bridge Wednesday morning, October 26, 2016
Sunderland, Massachusetts
Two people have been sent to the hospital with minor injuries after a five-car crash on the Deerfield-Sunderland Bridge Wednesday morning.
Deerfield Police Officer Adam Sokoloski said the crash happened at 8:38 a.m. when a vehicle traveling into Sunderland rear-ended another in front of it while traffic was slowing. The impact was strong enough that the struck vehicle was pushed into three other vehicles in front of it.
Sokoloski said traffic was backed up in both directions while police and fire personnel cleared the scene.
“Traffic was really affected,” he said. “It seems the lights in Sunderland are not handling the traffic as well as they should be, and I think because of the Route 9 construction, a lot of people are coming through (Sunderland) to Amherst.”
Later, Sokoloski noted that Chief John Paciorek “made a call to MassDOT to look at the lights and traffic.” In response, Sokoloski said the state said they would look at the lights as soon as possible, and take a “traffic count.”
The scene was cleared by 9:15 a.m., he said. Three of the involved vehicles were towed from the scene. The driver who initiated the crash was cited for failing to use care when stopping, Sokoloski said.
South County EMS transported the victims to the hospital, while South Deerfield firefighters helped clean up fluids. at scene.
