Memphis, TN : 22-year-old suffers major facial injuries after I-240 crash on Sunday, May 15, 2016
One person was taken to the hospital after a critical crash on Interstate 240.
The crash happened just before 11 a.m. on I-240 southbound near Walnut Grove.
Police said one vehicle was involved in the crash. Police said the car swerved, hit a guardrail, and drove out of control into a concrete wall on the other side of the road, blocking the exit.
Family said 22-year-old Ashleigh Hayes was taken to Regional Medical Center in critical condition.
"I saw a young lady staggering in the road,” witness Cathy Wood said. “Car smashed into the guard rail."
Wood said when she saw Hayes standing on 240, she had to pull over.
"I grabbed a picnic blanket and we laid her down and wrapped her in it to keep her from going into shock,” Wood said.
Police said Hayes will be cited for having no driver’s license and failure to maintain proper control.
"As a parent, it was hard. It was a massive facial injury,” Hayes’ father James Claybrook said.
Claybrook said his daughter is doing okay but suffered serious injuries in the crash.
"From here over was ripped open,” he said, pointing across his face. “I don’t know if she had any teeth up here too; there was just massive amounts of blood.”
Wood said witnesses did all they could to help her. They even found her phone and called her parents to tell them what happened.
"She couldn’t speak very well,” Wood said. We got the phone and she pointed at numbers on the phone.”
Claybrook said his daughter just graduated from the University of Memphis a week ago.
"You now have strangers who love you and care about you and are praying for you every day,” he said.
