Two Massachusetts men were killed Tuesday morning in a crash involving two tractor-trailers and a box truck on Route 195 West.
The victims were Steven Magan, 40, of Palmer, and Axel Moran, 38, of Marlboro, according to a news release by the Rhode Island State Police. They were pronounced dead at the scene.
Magan was driving the box truck and Moran was a passenger.
The crash occurred near Exit 8 around 10 a.m. when the box truck and a tractor-trailer in front of it slowed down in traffic. A second tractor-trailer then collided with the rear of the box truck, crushing it into the rear of the first tractor-trailer, police said.
The driver of the tractor-trailer that collided with the rear of the box truck was taken to Rhode Island Hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
The driver of the first tractor-trailer was not injured.
Neither of the truck drivers has been identified.
The cause of the crash is under investigation by the Rhode Island State Police Forensic Services Unit, the Commercial Enforcement Unit, the Collision Reconstruction Unit and the Lincoln Wood Barracks, along with the Rhode Island Medical Examiner’s Office.
The crash blocked all but the breakdown lane on Route 195 West for five hours while the vehicles were removed and the incident investigated. The left-hand lane of Route 195 East was also closed for several hours as crews cleared the scene.
