A man from Katy was killed Friday in a crash in Pueblo County, Colorado.
Charles Roberts, 59, was delivering a van of stray animals from shelters in Houston when he lost control on Interstate 25 in Pueblo County and hit a guardrail before crashing into a rock embankment, the Colorado State Patrol said.Roberts worked as a driver for an organization called Rescued Pets Movement, which removes stray cats and dogs from city-area shelters. He delivered them to shelters in Colorado, where they would be placed in permanent homes.
"He loved what he did. He loved the animals. He loved the organization," said Laura Carlock, who worked with Roberts at Rescued Pets Movement.
Carlock said he drove for the organization for over a year. Every week he would make the trip. Roberts' son, Jared, traveled with him. Jared was in the passenger's seat of the van that crashed. Officials said he survived.
Carlock and others have set up a GoFundMe page for Roberts' family.
“It's the least that can be done,” Carlock said, “in memory of a man who did so much.
"Every week he was there with a smile on his face and he loved what he did a search we were thankful to have him on our team and in our family."
The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
