Shawnee County,KS : Driver in fatal crash identified as Adrian Garcia, 14, of Topeka on Sunday, 10th May, 2020
The Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office revealed Monday that 14-year-old Adrian Garcia of Topeka was the driver killed in a one-vehicle crash thought to have occurred early Sunday morning along US-40 highway east of Topeka.
Circumstances of the crash remained under investigation, said sheriff’s Sgt. Todd Stallbaumer.
Sheriff’s Capt. Danny Lotridge said Sunday that information gathered by deputies suggested the crash occurred some time around 4:30 to 4:45 a.m. that day.
Lotridge said a resident of the 7000 block of S.E. US-40 contacted authorities about 8:45 a.m. Sunday after finding debris from the crash, in which an eastbound Nissan Infinity G35 left US-40 on its south side for an unknown reason, rolled multiple times and came to rest in a densely wooded area where it couldn’t be seen from the highway.
Lotridge said the driver was pronounced dead at the scene, which was in the area of US-40's intersection with S.E. 10th Street.
Garcia may have been driving illegally, as Kansas law bans anyone under 15 from having a driver’s license. Fourteen-year-olds may acquire a learner’s permit but may only drive while accompanied by an adult who is at least 21 years old and has at least a year of driving experience.
