Lowell, MA : Two pedestrians hurt in Lowell collision on Wednesday night, August 3, 2016
A car on Branch Street struck two pedestrians Wednesday night, and one of them suffered serious injuries that led to her being flown to a Boston trauma center.
A member of the Police Department's gang unit apparently came across the crash as he was driving on Branch Street near Loring Street Wednesday about 7:05 p.m. The officer asked dispatchers to send an ambulance and to ask the ambulance crew to "step it up" a short time before he also requested paramedics. A second ambulance was later requested for a second pedestrian, a man, who did not appear to be seriously injured.
The male pedestrian was walking on his own power and talking to police at the scene, but a female pedestrian remained on her back in the street as emergency crews huddled over her.
Firefighters soon requested a MedFlight helicopter to transport the woman, and that helicopter landed at Lowell General Hospital, where the woman was taken by ambulance, according to a fire department radio broadcasts.
A black BMW sedan remained at the scene with the lower, passenger side portion of its windshield caved in.
Police blocked the street with police tape to preserve the scene for accident reconstruction.
Branch Street will be closed between Loring and Walker streets while the investigation is conducted. Police could not immediately comment.
A report published by WCVB-TV said a woman at the scene who identified herself as the driver of the BMW said both pedestrians ran out in front of her car without looking.
