Portsmouth, N.H : woman crashed her car into a pole on Cottage Street in Portsmouth on Sunday, August 3, 2014
Portsmouth, New Hampshire
A woman was hospitalized Sunday after crashing a sport utility vehicle into a pole, causing the temporary closure of Cottage Street and power outages in the area, said Deputy Fire Chief James Heinz.
Firefighters were called to the intersection of the Route 1 Bypass and Cottage Street at 5:59 p.m. on Sunday when they found a black SUV head-on into the pole which had snapped, said Heinz. Firefighters from Station 3 responded to the crash scene, while firefighters from Station 1 rescued people who were trapped in elevators at two hotels because of a related power outage, he said.
The driver of the SUV, a 24-year-old woman, had self-extricated and was suffering from “traumatic” but not life threatening injuries, said the deputy fire chief. She was transported by ambulance to Portsmouth Regional Hospital, he said.
Cottage Street was closed for hours after the crash while Public Service of New Hampshire responded to replace the pole.
Police Sgt. David Keaveny said the cause of the crash remains under investigation and that the driver had not been charged with any crime as of Monday afternoon.
