Tallahassee, FL : Fatal crash on I-75 occurs Sunday night in Collier on Sunday, 30th October 2016
A Naples man died in a crash Sunday night on Interstate 75 in Collier County, authorities said.
Elizabeth Figueroa Hernandez, 28, of Naples, was driving her 2008 Nissan southbound on I-75 south of the Pine Ridge Road exit at mile marker 106 in North Naples around 7:44 p.m. when she turned southwest to try to avoid a collision with a vehicle directly in front of her, according to a Florida Highway Patrol news release.
Figueroa Hernandez's Nissan then crossed the center and outside lanes, struck a traffic sign, crashed into a ditch west of the paved shoulder of I-75 and hit a tree, which caused the car to overturn, according to the release.
Figueroa Hernandez's father, Eddy Figueroa, said his daughter told him a van cut in front of her and ran her off the highway. FHP spokesman Lt. Greg Bueno said troopers are investigating what caused the woman to lose control of the car.
Figueroa Hernandez's passenger, Juan Zafra, 34, of Naples, died in the crash. Figueroa Hernandez and Zafra's 5-year-old daughter, Lizbeth, suffered minor injuries, and both were taken to a hospital. Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, the release stated.
