A fourth person, an 11-year-old boy, was released from a hospital, said Lt. Catherine Buckley.

The four were injured in a crash around 9 p.m. Sunday on the 2400 block of North Nevada Avenue near Penrose Hospital, police said.

Residents in the area reported a loud boom-like sound and onlookers said a silver Volkswagen traveling west on East Jackson Street was attempting to make a lefthand turn onto southbound Nevada Avenue when a Chevrolet Corvette reportedly ran a red light and hit the Volkswagen. Witnesses said the Corvette was traveling at high speed, and that the Volkswagen split into two pieces.

Buckley said in an email that the Volkswagen's driver was in critical condition Monday. The 11-year-old boy was a passenger in the vehicle.

The driver and passenger in the Corvette were rescued from the vehicle as it caught fire, onlookers said.

The driver of the Corvette was in serious condition, and the passenger was in critical condition, Buckley said.

Nevada Avenue was closed to traffic for more than six hours. Buckley said the investigation is ongoing and that no one had been cited in the crash as of Monday afternoon.
