CHARLOTTE, NC : I-85 south reopens after Monday's crash involving hazardous materials on Tuesday, 20th September 2016
Charlotte, North Carolina
A section of Interstate 85 was still closed Tuesday morning following a crash involving a hazardous material spill Monday night. By 5:40 a.m. Tuesday, all lanes were back open.
The wreck happened on southbound I-85 near the Little Rock Road, Exit 32. Officials said a pickup truck towing a trailer with asphalt sealant spilled its cargo across all five lanes in the three-vehicle crash.
Investigators have not said what may have led to the crash or if any injuries were reported.
"Asphalt sealant is highly flammable with vapors that travel along the ground and collect in low areas, according to the USDOT Emergency Response Guide," NCDOT officials said. "According to the Metrolina Regional Transportation Management Center, an emergency response cleanup team began the initial work of containing the material, and the Environmental Protection Agency was headed to the scene."
All traffic heading south was being detoured. Drivers were told to take the Little Rock Road exit and turn right, turn left on U.S. 74, get on the I-485 on-ramp, turn left onto the I-485 inner loop and merge back onto I-85.
