Lickdale, PA : One person ejected after a car struck a deer and rolled on Lickdale Road in Swatara Township on Wednesday, November 12, 2014
A man was injured Wednesday morning in Swatara Township when he was thrown from his vehicle after it struck a deer on Lickdale Road.
The man, whose name has not been released, was taken by Penn State Hershey LifeLion helicopter to Hershey Medical Center. Without a name, his condition could not be learned.
The crash occurred about 10:25 a.m. in the 400 block of Lickdale Road, a straight, two-lane roadway bordered on each side by cornfields, just west of Darkes Road.
Becky Kindrew of Wolmesdorf reported the crash to the Lebanon County Emergency Management Agency 9-1-1 Call Center. She was following the car heading west when the deer burst out of the fields and was struck by the late model Hyundai Accent GL. After hitting the deer, the car spun and struck an embankment, causing it to roll onto its passenger's side and ejecting one of the occupants.
Kindrew, who was on her way to a bank from her job at the McDonald's in Lickdale, said the occupant who was thrown from the vehicle was lying in the middle of the road, bleeding heavily from a wound to his head and groaning. The deer also was alive momentarily before it died, she said.
"I was coming across the bridge right here, and in two seconds everything was over," she said. "I just went up to the guy on the road and saw his skull cracked open. I hunt, so I'm used to that kind of stuff, but not a human."
Kindrew said she was surprised to find another occupant in the car.
"I went over to look at the car to see if anybody was in there. I didn't see the other guy at first. And then his head popped up, and I was like, 'are you OK?,'" she said. "As I said to the one state cop, I was just trying to have a normal day when everything changed."
The other occupant, who also has not been identified, had bruises on his head but was alert and walking at the scene. He was checked by First Aid and Safety Patrol medics and refused further treatment.
A man and woman believed to be relatives of the more seriously injured man were also at the scene talking to state police at Lickdale, who are investigating the crash. No police report has been released. The road was blocked to traffic by fire police for more than an hour before the car was towed and the road cleaned of debris. Lickdale and Fredericksburg fire companies assisted at the scene.
