A man and woman were killed Friday afternoon when their van crashed head-on into a SamTrans bus on El Camino Real, authorities said.
The deadly collision occurred about 12:30 p.m. near 10th Avenue when a dark-green passenger van veered into the path of a northbound bus headed for Daly City, said Jayme Ackemann, spokeswoman for the transit agency.
The woman riding in the passenger seat was pronounced dead at the scene. The man who was driving was taken to a hospital, where he died from his injuries, Ackemann said.
More than 20 passengers were in the bus when the crash occurred, and five were taken to the hospital with injuries described as not life-threatening. The bus driver was not injured.
It was unclear what caused the van to travel into oncoming traffic. Further details were not immediately available.
The last fatality involving a SamTrans bus was in December 2010 where one person was struck and killed.
