ATHOL, MA : One person was killed in a one-car crash at South Athol Road on Saturday, 12th May 2018

One person was killed in a one-car crash at South Athol Road and Riverview Avenue at about 8:45 p.m. Sunday, police said.

The car, a Nissan Altima, apparently struck a tree and was on its roof when police arrived. One person was ejected, while two others were trapped inside and were freed by firefighters from the Athol and Orange fire departments using hydraulic tools, Police Chief Russell T. Kleber reported in a news release.

One victim was taken by ambulance to a Worcester hospital. A second was transported to Athol Hospital. The third was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said their preliminary investigation showed that the driver was headed east on South Athol Road when the crash occurred. Athol and state police from the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section are investigating to determine the cause of the crash.
