North Platte, NE : One killed, one critically injured in semi wreck on Thursday September 1 2016
One person died and another person was critically injured Thursday morning in Omaha when their semitrailer truck veered off eastbound Interstate 80 into a dry ravine just west of 50th Street.
The right three lanes of eastbound I-80 were closed between 60th and 42nd Streets for about two hours before police tweeted around 8 a.m. that all lanes had reopened. Authorities asked that motorists avoid the right lane if possible to provide a buffer for officers working at the scene.
Just prior to the crash around 5:55 a.m., Douglas County 911 dispatchers received reports that the semi’s driver had been driving erratically before veering about 50 yards to the south off I-80.
The person who died in the crash was found in the semi’s sleeper compartment, according to reports to dispatchers.
The injured person had to be cut free from the semi’s cab after it and the trailer ended up on its side in the ravine, dispatchers said. The person was taken by ambulance to the Nebraska Medical Center in critical condition.
Rescue squad personnel used a tow rope to haul their gear and the injured person up a steep hill to eastbound I-80.
The crash occurred in a wooded, dry ravine with a partially graveled, one-lane path running parallel on the north side of the ravine.
