KOKOMO, IN : Two Kokomo residents were airlifted following a car accident on Monday, August 21, 2017
Two Kokomo residents were airlifted following a car accident Sunday in which deputies say one driver disregarded a stop sign at a four-way stop.
Jackie Meador, 87, and Mary Meador, 89, were both taken to Parkview Health in Fort Wayne for treatment. A representative from the hospital said Monday afternoon that Mary Meador was listed in serious condition and Jackie Meador was listed in fair condition.
According to a crash report from the Howard County Sheriff’s Department, the crash happened at around 1:10 p.m., at the intersection of East 400 North and North 300 East.
The report states Jackie Meador was driving a Chevrolet Malibu, and was attempting to turn westbound on 400 North. At that time, Jasper Jackson, 20, Windfall, was driving westbound on 400 North, and disregarded the stop sign at the intersection, according to the report.
Jackson’s vehicle hit the other vehicle on the passenger side, with Meador’s vehicle leaving the roadway, going down the bank of a ditch and up the other side, then coming to a rest in a field. Jackson’s vehicle came to a rest on the grass off the side of the road.
Jackson told deputies he wasn’t familiar with the area, and didn’t see the stop sign until it was too late. He slammed on the brakes, he said, and attempted to swerve out of the way of the other vehicle before impact.
Jackson was given two citations for disregarding a stop sign and failure to wear a seatbelt. The report states he did not require to be transported from the scene. A third occupant in Meador’s vehicle refused medical treatment at the scene.
Damage exceeded $25,000.
