One man was arrested Friday following a fatal crash in McDowell County that claimed the life of an elderly woman who was traveling on U.S. Route 52.
The crash was reported Friday afternoon on Route 52 near the intersection with Route 1 in Iaeger, according to Trooper J.C. Woods of the West Virginia State Police Welch detachment. According to the initial report, a Ford SUV was traveling north on Route 52 when it encountered a Chevrolet sedan that was traveling south.
The SUV crossed the center line and struck the sedan, according to Woods. The driver, an elderly female, was pronounced dead at the scene as a result of the crash. Her family was being notified, but her identity was withheld Friday evening pending the notification of all next of kin.
Richard Edwards, 40, of Panther was later arrested and charged with DUI causing in death, Woods said. Edwards was being processed Friday night at the Welch detachment before being transported to the McDowell County Holding Facility near the McDowell County Courthouse.
Trooper M.D. Brooks also worked at the crash scene. The Iaeger Volunteer Fire Department and Jan Care Ambulance were also dispatched.
Edwards is scheduled to be arraigned Saturday morning.
