Azusa,CA : Two children killed when SUV plunges 40 feet off Southern California mountain road on Saturday evening,July 4th 2015

Authorities say a 7-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl were killed and another person suffered critical injuries after their SUV careened off the side of a Southern California mountain road and plunged 40 feet.

Los Angeles County fire officials say the vehicle went over an embankment Saturday evening in the hills above Azusa.

Azusa police Lt. Paul Dennis says when officers arrived they found the SUV on its roof in a ravine.

The two children were found dead outside the vehicle.

Dennis says a 32-year-old man, a 32-year-old woman and a 13-year-old had various injuries. One of them was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition.

Coroner's officials are withholding the names of the children pending notification of family.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
