Two 83-year-old Hi-Desert residents died in a collision on Twentynine Palms Highway at La Honda Way Friday afternoon.
Doreen Hollingsworth, of Yucca Valley, and Duane Griffin, of Morongo Valley, died when their Toyota Corolla hit a Lincoln MKZ at 2:07 p.m. Friday, the county coroner reported.
According to the Sheriff’s Department, Hollingsworth was driving the silver Toyota east on Twentynine Palms Highway when she sideswiped a Chevrolet pickup truck also headed east.
The collision caused the Corolla to go into the left turn lane, where it ran head-on into a westbound Lincoln MKZ whose driver had entered the turn lane.
Paramedics pronounced Hollingsworth and Griffin dead at the scene.
The two people inside the Lincoln MKZ were driven to Desert Regional Medical Center, investigators said at the scene.
The driver of the pickup truck was not hurt.
The Morongo Basin Major Investigation Team responded to the scene. The cause of the collision is still under investigation.
Twentynine Palms Highway was closed from west of La Honda to Chemehuevi for hours after the crash.
