Santa Cruz, CA : Fresno man held on drug charges in crash that killed Aptos woman on early Saturday morning, August 9, 2014
A 24-year-old Aptos woman died and two men -- one of them from Fresno -- were arrested when their car crashed into a concrete wall after leading California Highway Patrol officers on a vehicle pursuit early Saturday morning.
About 2:20 a.m., officers saw a 2014 Ford Fusion speeding on Graham Hill Road just south of Sims Road, Sgt. Grant Boles said.
Boles said that when the officers tried to stop the vehicle, the car sped away.
About one minute and roughly one mile later on Graham Hill Road, the Ford struck a concrete wall head-on and the vehicle caught fire, Boles said.
Officers were able to pull the male driver, male passenger and female passenger from the vehicle, Bole said. The woman, who was seated in the back seat on the driver's side, died at the scene. Authorities have not released her name, pending notification of her family.
It's unclear if any of the car's occupants were wearing seat belts, Boles said.
The driver, 23-year-old Marquis Edwards, and the man in the front passenger seat, 21-year-old Devontreal Thacker of Fresno, suffered serious, nonlife-threatening injuries and were transported to Bay Area hospitals. Boles said both the driver and the passenger are under arrest.
Edwards, of Soquel, was arrested on suspicion felony drunken driving and felony evasion, Boles said. Boles said he is also investigating whether to recommend charges related to the death of the woman.
Thacker was arrested on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance.
Both are expected to be booked into Santa Cruz County Jail after they're released from the hospital.
