Grosse Ile, MI : Dearborn Heights officers injured; other driver in critical condition after crash in Allen Park on Monday night, January 2, 2017

A man is in critical condition after a two-vehicle crash Monday night that also injured two on-duty Dearborn Heights police officers.

The crash occurred at about 9 p.m. near the intersection of Van Born and Pelham roads, an intersection that crosses three jurisdictions - Allen Park, Taylor and Dearborn Heights.

The Allen Park Police Department took the initial lead in the investigation, but has turned it over to the Michigan State Police.

Lt. Mike Shaw, public information officer with the state police, said detectives with the Special Investigation Section were expected to head to the Allen Park police station Tuesday morning to gather information and assume the investigation.

Based on the preliminary investigation, a Dearborn Heights patrol vehicle, a Ford Explorer, was driving east on Van Born Road, attempting to catch up to a car to make a traffic stop. In doing so, the vehicle entered the intersection of Pelham Road, striking a Lexus ES 350, heading west on Van Born, attempting to make a left turn onto southbound Pelham Road.

The officers had to be extricated from the patrol vehicle by emergency personnel and were taken to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the other vehicle remains hospitalized in critical condition.

Dearborn Heights Police Chief Lee Gavin said Tuesday morning that both officers remain hospitalized, but are expected to recover from their injuries. Both were listed in fair condition as of noon Tuesday.

“It looks like they’ll be OK,” Gavin said. “One has broken bones in the wrist.”

Gavin said more details about the crash weren’t immediately available as the state police are just beginning their investigation.
