Athens, TX : Former Henderson County deputy dead in A two-vehicle collision in Henderson County on Wednesday, January 21, 2015
A former Henderson County Deputy was killed Wednesday in a head-on collision near Athens.
DPS Trooper Jean Dark said a truck, driven by 37-year-old Kevin Hanes of Athens, was traveling east on Loop 7 when his vehicle smashed into a car heading west at around 1:30 p.m. A preliminary investigation determined Hanes had crossed into the westbound lanes and hit the car.
Both drivers were taken to a Tyler hospital where Hanes was pronounced dead by Dr. Darrell Alley at 3:22 p.m. He was a former Henderson County deputy, according to the Sheriff's Office. His body was taken to Hannigan Smith Funeral Home in Athens.
The other driver was identified as Bobrow Gunnels, 77, of Kemp. He was also taken to a Tyler hospital and was last reported in serious condition.
