Lehigh Acres, FL : 19-year-old Lee County woman killed in a wrong-way crash Thursday night in Lehigh Acres on Thursday night, February 4, 2016
A Lee County teenager was killed in a wrong-way crash Thursday night in Lehigh Acres.
Maria A. Ortiz Fuentes, 19, of Lehigh Acres, died at Lehigh Regional Medical Center following the three-vehicle crash, which occurred about 6:45 p.m. near the intersection of Leeland Heights Boulevard and Greenwood Avenue, the Florida Highway Patrol reports.
Jose Luis Castaneda, 60, of Lehigh, was cited for driving on the wrong side of the road, and was seriously injured in the crash, FHP reports.
Castaneda was westbound in the inside eastbound lanes of Leeland Heights Boulevard, when the left side of his 2014 Chevrolet Camaro struck the left side mirror of an eastbound Hyandai Elantra compact car driven by Carlos O. Delgado, 69, also of Lehigh. Delgado and Fuentes both swerved their vehicles to the right in an attempt to avoid the Camaro, but the front left side of Castaneda’s car struck the front left side of the 1998 Nissan Sentra sedan driven by Fuentes, reports show.
Both Fuentes and Castaneda were critically injured and taken to the Lehigh hospital, where Fuentes died. Delgado was not injured in the crash. All drivers were wearing seat belts, FHP reports.
