Iowa City ,IA : 39 - Years old Gary Griffey killed and Semi driver injured aftersemi hit an overpass along Interstate 80 on Friday morning ,May 22nd 2015

The passenger in a semi traveling near Iowa City Friday morning was killed when the semi hit an overpass.

An Iowa State Patrol crash report just released shows the semi crashed in the westbound lanes of I-80 at mile marker 244 near Iowa City at 8:12 a.m.

Troopers said the semi drifted right off the shoulder of the road and hit the overpass. The truck came to rest on the interstate and started on fire.

Driver Shawn Freeman, 24, of Plattsmouth, Neb., and passenger Gary Griffey, 39, of Lafayette, Indiana, were taken to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Griffey died from injuries sustained in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.
