Montgomery County, IN : Teenager dies in crash near Crawfordsville on Thursday, October 13, 2016
A teenager died Thursday in a two-car crash near Crawfordsville, according to the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office.
Thomas J. Edwards, 17, of Crawfordsville was pronounced dead at a local hospital after he was taken from the scene of the crash, which occurred at 7:17 a.m. near U.S. 136 and Nucor Road, according to a news release.
Edwards, driving a 1994 Toyota, and 39-year-old Kelly J. Kruse, driving a 2010 Chevrolet, were involved in the crash. Thirty-seven-year-old Matthew Garret of Terre Haute was a passenger in the second car.
Kruse and Garrett also were taken to local hospitals and then airlifted to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.
U.S. 136 was closed for roughly four hours while crews cleared the scene.
Edwards was a senior at Crawfordsville High School, where he played on the baseball team and was a member of the French club, according to the school's Assistant Principal Mark Melton. He had aspirations to attend a four-year college and study elementary education.
Special counseling services are being offered in the wake of the death.
"Students will have varied reactions to the death of a peer," Melton said in a news release. "Any reaction is normal in the grieving process and can range from withdrawal, crying and anger."
