Petaluma, CA : Napa Man Killed in Hit-and-Run Near Petaluma Saturday Morning on August 30, 2014
A 51-year-old Napa man was killed in a hit-and-run collision this morning on a rural Sonoma County road near Petaluma, the California Highway Patrol said.
At 4:09 a.m., CHP officers were dispatched to a report of a head-on collision on Bodega Avenue near King Road.
CHP officers arrived at the scene to find two vehicles blocking the roadway and one of the drivers trapped inside his vehicle. The other driver had left the scene prior to the officers’ arrival, the CHP said.
Emergency personnel performed life-saving measures on the trapped victim, but he was declared deceased at the scene, according to the CHP. Based on the preliminary investigation, the CHP said a 2007 Chevy pickup truck was traveling east on Bodega Avenue when it drifted onto the dirt shoulder of the road, striking two mailboxes.
The force of the impact spun the pickup truck 180 degrees and back onto the roadway. The pickup struck a 1994 Mazda traveling west on Bodega Avenue head-on, the CHP said.
The driver of the Mazda was trapped inside the vehicle while the driver of the Chevy took off on foot, the CHP said. The CHP conducted a thorough search of the area, including the use of a CHP airplane with a heat-sensing camera over the nearby fields, but the suspect was not located during the search.
The victim’s name is being withheld pending notification of his next of kin, the CHP said.
