Contra Costa County, CA : One dead, two critically injured in separate crashes on Marsh Creek Road in Contra Costa County on Sunday morning, Aug 30, 2015

A motorcyclist died, and a man and woman were seriously injured in two separate crashes in Contra Costa County early Sunday morning, the California Highway Patrol said.

The motorcycle wreck claimed the life of a 21-year-old Clayton man, the CHP said in a statement on its Contra Costa area Facebook page. He lost control of the 2003 Suzuki GSX-R759 slammed into a street sign while going east on Marsh Creek Road around 1:25 a.m., the CHP said.

The crash, just west of Morgan Territory Regional Preserve, launched the man off the motorcycle, and authorities pronounced him dead at the scene. The CHP did not release his identity, pending notification of his family.

Just more than 90 minutes later, a 1997 Honda Civic veered off southbound Kirker Pass Road, south of Hess Road and went through a barbed wire fence and down an embankment. The 37-year-old woman and 42-year-old man were hospitalized with major injuries.

The CHP said the woman was driving the car, and they were determining if drugs and alcohol were involved.

Investigators were working to determine why both drivers lost control. The CHP said it would like to speak to anyone who may have witnessed either crash, though they do not believe any other vehicles were involved in either one.
