Blair, NE : Valley man sentenced to prison for crash on May, Tuesday, 16th 2017

A Valley man who crashed his truck into two cars while driving under the influence was sentenced to prison Tuesday in Washington County District Court.

Zachary M. Wells, 46, pleaded no contest to DUI-third offense on Feb. 28.

Judge John E. Samson sentenced Wells to 12 months in prison and 15 months post-release supervision. Wells was given credit for 35 days served. His license was also revoked for 15 years.

“To be straight with you, I considered a term of probation because you went to a tough treatment facility,” Samson told Wells. “But there are too many aggravating factors.”

Prior to sentencing, Wells' attorney, Leo Eskey of Fremont, said his client admitted to having an “extremely serious drinking problem.”

Wells told Eskey he had hit “rock bottom.”

But since the accident, Eskey said his client had not drunk alcohol in six months, was gainfully employed and began treatment.

“I am committed to this sobriety,” Wells said.

Wells told the judge he was tired of starting over and “losing homes, cars, jobs and wives.”

“No matter what happens here, I'm going to stay sober,” Wells said. “That's my path and I've chosen it.”

Wells was arrested on Nov. 12 after he crashed his 1995 Dodge Ram 2500 truck into two vehicles parked along the 900 block of North 18th Avenue in Blair. Wells had been traveling at a high rate of speed, according to witnesses.
