Medford, OR : Slick corner sees crash spree on Saturday, 1st October 2016
A sharp, slick corner where Corey Road turns into Kershaw Road in White City was the scene of a head-on collision and four other crashes over Saturday and Sunday.
"The first rain after the summer there's a lot of oil build up on the road," said Mike Calhoun, battalion chief for Fire District No. 3.
In four of the crashes, only a single vehicle was involved. Two of the crashes were rollovers and in the other two, the vehicle slid into the ditch.
The first crash took place around 8:30 a.m. Saturday morning, followed by another around 9:45 a.m., Calhoun said.
And, then on Sunday, crashes occurred around 9 a.m, 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. In the 9 a.m. crash, the occupant of the vehicle refused treatment for bumps and bruises, Calhoun said.
The worst crash was the 2 p.m. Sunday head-on collision where six people had to be extricated from their vehicles and were taken to the hospital for treatment, Calhoun said.
"I’m fairly certain everyone was wearing seat belts, and the kids were in child seats," he said. Calhoun said none of the occupants in the vehicles appeared to sustain life-threatening injuries.
The crashes all occurred near the entrance to the gun range in White City, Calhoun said.
He said the crashes appear to be the result of a slick road and possibly higher-than-posted speeds. According to Google Maps, the speed posted at the curve is 20 mph compared to 45 mph on Corey and Kershaw.
Calhoun said there was some moisture on the ground when he got up Saturday morning, and then more rain came down Saturday night through the day Sunday.
At the beginning of the rainy season, Calhoun said motorists should be very careful on Jackson County roads because of oil accumulation over the summer that causes slick conditions.
He said there's a lot of evidence the Corey and Kershaw corner has seen its share of unreported crashes.
