Rochester, MN : Officials find another bike near fatal crash site on Tuesday, 25th August, 2016
Though no information has come in regarding the fatal hit-and-run Tuesday night just north of Rochester, authorities came across something Thursday near the scene that's being called "more than a coincidence."
Ramiz Hamzagic, of Rochester, was found dead in the 4900 block of Broadway Avenue North after a caller reported coming upon a motorcycle accident at 10:26 p.m. When responders arrived, they found Hamzagic at the edge of the roadway's northbound lane. A motorized bicycle was nearby.
Evidence at the scene indicated Hamzagic was traveling in the northbound lane when he was struck, said Capt. Scott Behrns of the Olmsted County Sheriff's Office, "but other than that, we have nothing else to go on."
Thursday morning, however, officials recovered a motorized bicycle near the intersection of 48th Street and Broadway Avenue North. It was similar to the one Hamzagic was riding; his bike was destroyed in the crash, Behrns said.
Members of a construction crew in the area said the bicycle wasn't there Tuesday evening when they left, the report says.
"It's more than a coincidence that it was there," Behrns said today, "but the significance to the case is still to be determined."
The impact likely caused front-end damage to whatever vehicle hit Hamzagic, he said, asking members of the public to share the information and for employees of body shops and auto parts stores to also be vigilant. There was no indication of tire marks from a vehicle braking.
Hamzagic had gone into Rochester to run a quick errand, officials have learned, and was likely on his way home when he was hit. Authorities are trying to establish what business he visited on the errand.
"We still need to hear from the public," Behrns said. "Somebody had to have seen him riding somewhere that night. Your guilt will kill you; please come forward. If somebody saw him between 10 and 10:20 p.m., I'd love to hear from you."
Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Olmsted County Sheriff's Office at 328-6800. Those wishing to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers of Rochester and Olmsted County at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
Hamzagic was born in Germany and moved to Rochester at age 4, his obituary says. After high school, he moved to Georgia for a short while, and has been living in Rochester since returning.
His funeral is today.
