Hamden, CT : Deputies say trucker died in Hamden crash on Wednesday, 30th January 2019

Delaware County sheriff's deputies said on Wednesday that a 77-year-old Homer man died in a tractor trailer roll-over accident Tuesday night in Hamden.

According to a media release, emergency response was called at about 7:35 p.m. to state Route 10 in Hamden, just north of a New York State Department of Transportation Facility The rolloever crash, with the driver entrapped, resulted in the closure of that roadway for several hours.

The news release said responders determined the tractor-trailer had struck and severed a utility pole, bringing power lines down on the overturned truck. The driver of the truck, James L. Updyke, was determined to be deceased.

Due to road conditions, the highway was closed down during the investigation and clean-up of the accident. Traffic was re-routed to East River Road until the highway was re-opened early Wednesday morning.

NYSEG crews responded to the scene to terminate the electric service at the accident scene and remove the downed power lines to allow responders to safely approach and clean up the scene, the release said. NYSEG crews later restored power after the removal of the vehicle.

Deputies said their investigation determined Updyke was traveling north on Route 10 when the truck and trailer failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway, crossed the road and ran off the southbound shoulder, where the truck struck a utility pole and tree, and overturned.
